Drivers will have to visit the MVC office once every eight years for a license renewal and a new photo, instead of every four years now.' Hallelujah,' said Carmine G.

Naddeo of Bloomfield, whose license is up for renewal next year. 'You’ve got problems with these (MVC) offices being crowded, the systems being down and all the rest of it.'
Naddeo found it silly that every four years he had to escort his wife, who doesn’t drive, to the MVC office for a photo identification to allow her to board a plane.MVC Chief Administrator Ray Martinez said that over the next year, 1.5 million New Jersey residents will have the option of skipping a trip to commission offices. He said that in the past 11 months, since people born before Dec. 1, 1964, were given the option of skipping their next office visit, 340,000 have taken advantage of the offer — about three of every five customers. If that acceptance rate holds, about 1 million fewer people will visit MVC offices in the next year, Martinez said.' It’s worked well. Everything has gone off without a hitch, so we are expanding it to the entire population now,' he said. 'That has a huge potential to save people a lot of time.' The average wait time at an MVC office is 26 minutes, but Martinez acknowledged, 'The worst office in the state, at the end of the month, you could be there for two hours possibly, I suppose.'
He said that if all 1.5 million eligible customers in the next year skipped the trip and mailed in the renewals, avoiding the average wait time of 26 minutes, 'they essentially have no wait time and that amounts to 650,000 wait hours saved.' The MVC has embarked on an advertising campaign and set up a website (SkipItList.com) showing the pleasurable activities customers could be partaking in instead of waiting in lines, such as enjoying lemonade with their friends or playing basketball with their child. The ultimate goal is to let drivers renew online, which Martinez expects to be an option within two years.Next week, invitations will start to be sent to eligible residents due to renew their licenses in October.
